Common Challenges First Year Students Encounter at University

Starting University is a huge transitional period and a new chapter in your life. When you leave home to embark on a new journey of self-reliance and self-discovery.

A few students are not always prepared for the mental and physical challenges that University brings and end up being overwhelmed, so it’s a better way of dealing with this is by preparing yourself with anything that may pop-up.

  1. Homesickness

Since for most students its normally the first time being away from home, and this can normally strike homesickness quite hard. However, with the technology that surrounds us we have a way to always be connected with our family and friends.

  2. Pressure of Studies

Juggling the education costs and nailing all your studies can be quite tricky, however you just need to focus and enjoy the time there and keep a nice balance between the two. If you feel like you need a bit of extra cash, you can always look into getting a part time job near your campus!

  3. Making Friends

It can be difficult to make new friends especially in a new environment but its not impossible. Just make sure to be yourself and take part in activities and hobbies that you enjoy.

  4. Housing/Accommodation Problems

Moving into a new house is exciting and can be a little daunting, with the realisation and responsibility that your parents aren’t going to be there to pick up after you. Learning critical skills like cooking and cleaning is essential, but there is no need to worry about it; you’ll soon get the hang of it, plus your housemates will all do their bit.

  5. Budgeting

Being in charge of all your financial outgoings can be a juggling act, buying your food, rent, nights out, etc. Keeping an eye on your bank account is essential; it could be a good idea to think about creating a budgeting spreadsheet outlining all your costs. You could consider a part-time job to earn some extra money on the side as well.
